Unexpected Certainty

I took an epic journey from USA to India. You may ask why Epic! Coz it’s 2020 with Corona. Couldn’t imagine that normalcy has taken you through lots of twists, turns, ups and downs.

My little one’s ground transport with AI in the background

Alright, let me deep dive! Just like others i was also looking out for a better job and got through an offer in Chennai, India. Before i travelled we wanted to make sure we get the best of information.

There was lot of helpful information online like FB, Blogs etc. But just like finger prints are unique for every human being the experience has also proven to be different. Booked flight on July last week for Aug 19th travel on Emirates as we have traveled couple of times and their marketing was way to elusive to attract customers. Of course they weren’t making up stories and they have a strict COVID guidelines. But the route which we got the tickets were from SFO-BOS-DXB-MAA oh yes it’s a 30 hr journey with layover of 6.5hrs in Boston!

Btw, Emirates costed $4500 (3adults, 1 kid) and governments across borders added new norms after booking that we need RT-PCR testing before 96 hours before travel. Now, here’s the twist begins! Most of the tests we got to know via online posts of FB were giving the results (in CA) after 5 days minimum and some are covered, few of them are free (which might take a week or so) but our case was edge!

Well here are the List of things we need to take during the flight irrespective of your airlines.

Our flight was on a Wednesday and 96 hours before would fall on Sat. Thats a bummer coz whatever clinics or any other medical locations we found were not giving the results within the stipulated time frame or they are not taking travel related PCR test, coz they say we don’t have enough kit. During these errand hunt for the tests my better half had a spark why don’t you check Air India website and see if you can find a booking on the same day as Emirates. Well what you know, we got the tickets for all four same day and the total journey was 20hrs!! with $1000 less than Emirates. So we had something as a backup if Emirates gets cancelled.

Everybody gave lot of negative comments about Air India. We too had the same notion as others as their service was not great from what we have heard but for us the later was about the travel time and duration. And AI weren’t asking for the PCR testing and restrictions. We still sticked to get the 96 hours results and  hunting was on the spree to get at-least doctors letter that we are not a asymptomatic carrier.

Ok, as days pass we got to know that Emirates flights are not allowed to land as they didn’t get government clearance and it got cancelled. We hope to get our money back 30days from the cancellation so let’s see! Now, my better half intution has paid off! We were all prepared and getting the stuff ready for travel. Facebook including whatsapp was the key resource for all the information and comments about the journey towards our homeland!

To avoid self qurantine provied by government and for the benefit of elderly at home we booked the Mariott for self qurantine of 14 days they also had some miscommunication that we need to carry a PCR test result to be carried during our stay and later they informed it’s not required as we are anyways locked inside the room and not going to be out for full 14days.

Here are the actuals..

Follow:
Facebook : SOS global indians
Whatsapp: Chat-VBM

From what i heard/read that we need two types of forms. Self declaration, Exception if you have a 10 year old kid to skip the insitutional qurantine and be at home quarantine. All of these we can get it on delhi airport website (top right). From the blogs, we got to know that there was no in flight entertainment, limited food. So keeping those in mind we got homemade food (idly podi and Pulliogare)  made by our lovely friends aka extended family.

With all the hassle of this covid letters from different doc’s for all us we headed towards our 20 hr journey. Our flight was at 10.30AM so we planned to be at the airport 3hrs earlier to ease out the boarding process and enough time for all the formalities.

Gateway to heaven

First, we were temp checked before reaching to checkin area. You are asked to show your passport and there was self reporting forms which are handed out for you to key in the details but it’s not mandate to fill it rite away but need at the immigration in Chennai. Remember to tear the yellow copy and hand over the white sheet to immigration officer.

Loaded up to fly 8k miles

Once you are the checkin areas and your passports checked you are been asked to provide an Indian embassy self reporting form. Which we weren’t aware until the last minute but that doesn’t stop us from checkin the baggages and each were around 2-3kgs extra. Luckily we were able to register ourselves online for all of us but we didn’t get the confirmation code. Check your SPAM and hola you find that you have submitted and still waiting for the code. But after a short wait time of 15 mins we told the support person that we didn’t receive the code but we registered. He entered our email details and lets us go to on-boarding. We reached the gate on time and started boarding the flight.

About to set off for a new journey

Elderly and passengers with small kids were allowed first which includes us as well. While boarding the flight there is a long queue waiting to board but there are no social distancing followed. You are greeted by PPE worn hostess at the entrance and seats are clean and packed with a bag of food which has Breakfast, Lunch and snacks!

Yes, it’s a limited crew flight with no frequent services of food/beverages. Middle seats are provided with PPE and it’s not mandate to wear unless you feel safe to wear it. There are face-shields, masks and sanitizers that are tagged along with the food. While disembarking at Delhi we were handout immigration forms for customs. We landed 20 mins earlier at Delhi and moving on to transfer. It was quite a walk to the next gate at-least 10mins which i feel the elderly would need to have an active wheel chair assistance. We did a quick security check and proceeded to catch the Chennai flight.

During the walk towards the Chennai flight gate we were engaged in getting the aroghyasetu app which will only work only with your Indian mobile number.

We got our wifi connect with the support staff in Delhi that we landed safely and just 3 hrs away from seeing the loved ones. Before on-boarding, to Chennai we were given similar face-shields but to get inside the flight we have to wear the mask and shield together. And once you get inside the flight we seem similar environment as Delhi flight and this time we the seats had a box of sandwich and few items to munch for 2.5 hrs.

Once landed in Chennai, we had our immigration done within 10-15 mins. The shortest and best of all our travel times. The officer asked for the self declaration form, passports, air suvidha self declaration forms. Once we got the security clearance we were approached by an airport staff that he can help out in getting the baggage from the conveyor belt. With an agitated tone i said i don’t need the service coz i was assuming that he was trying to make up money. Later i went to the next stage where i came across folks from Chennai Corporation asking me to fill in the self declaration form and hand it over the covid testing area. I go what! testing. I said, we don’t need the testing as we got doctor letters that we are covid free and exception letter for skip home quarantine and i have also booked the hotel for 14 days at mariott. He goes, that wont work effective August 13th you need to take the test and quarantine for couple of days until your results are negative.

Btw, in the meantime the pickup driver had called me and i had to tell him that things are out in a good shape and i will call him if im going to be in mariott. Also the hotels keep changing on day to day basis but all of it are decent 4 start hotels with good quality food. So, coming back to the test. You are asked to give the form to the person in-charge of taking your names and number of people with you to allocate the hotel. Irrespective of the the hotel it’s INR2500/day per person and based on your needs the price will vary and mostly you will end up paying 5k/day. Once you agree to pay the money for the hotel you will be redirected to the medical team and anyone above 6months old should take the Covid test(nasal swab). You will carry the test tubes carrying your name on it and will be given to take with you for the test. Once you are done with the test you are asked to board the “public bus” aka pallavan bus to the hotel escorted by a cop.

On the way to Green park hotel for quarantine 2days

Best of all my 6 year old kid enjoyed the ride as this was first experience on a public transit in Chennai. Before you take the bus they will also make sure you collect the free food provided for that particular time. Ground staff will help you keep the suitcases but once you reach the hotel you are supposed to keep it out and take it inside the hotel. Make a note that you are required to take the suitcases from the bus and bring it for sanitization. After a quick temperature check, and again handed-over self declaration form (from hotel side) for records.

At the hotel, we are required to give a self declaration form, passport and upfront pay the price for 2 days to get your room key.

Now after 2 days of hotel stay we got to know we tested negative and now heading towards marriott for a week after which home sweet home…

Life is a journey and now we are doing this in quarantine style! Take care and stay blessed.

Fans or proxies!

I came across this article “The Hindu” yesterday. Though it was nicely articulated, I was surprised to see the people (pic) out there waiting to buy the tickets for the margazhi music season tickets!. Trust me, not all are fans most of them are proxies who wants to buy the tickets and they would sell to few people who are desperate to listen to the music season.

There are true facts like these ” Muralidharan, 59, a businessman, said he took turns with his driver to stand in the queue to buy tickets at The Music Academy for his wife and daughter. “I sent my driver at 3.30 a.m., relieved him around 7.30 a.m., waited for two hours and got the Rs. 12,000 season tickets,” he said”.  But this season is not just for fans but also for people who are in need of making money braving the chill weather of Chennai.

I’m not against/or criticizing the article. Just wanna say my view that Margazhi helps the needy make some money from it!

NAFCU – Strategic Growth Conference What Do Consumers Really Want From Banking Websites? Simplicity

It’s no great mystery that consumers consider bank websites less appealing than others, but the reasons why might surprise you.

Banks and credit unions have it tough when trying to sell online. Consumers would generally prefer to be doing anything other than banking, particularly if they have a few minutes to spend on the web. So you’d think financial institutions would be doing everything possible to make banking more enjoyable online.

Wrong.

According to a new study on consumer banking sites released today by Change Sciences Group, consumers are 17% less happy interacting with banking websites than they are interacting with other types of online properties, and 22% less likely to convert than on other types of sites.

What consumers want the most from banks is simplicity, not the latest promotion, cool features, or a wide range of product offerings.

“The way that most banks currently approach consumers may be missing the mark,” says Steve Ellis, a Change Sciences founder. “There’s an opportunity for banks and credit unions to retool products and services around simplicity as their central value proposition and make good on that proposition with the right kind of product and interactive design.”

Although many bank sites would appear to be relatively easy to use, when compared to other types of sites, they are not. Bank web sites are 25% less usable than e-commerce sites like Amazon and Walmart. Even compared to other top performing financial sites, bank sites still perform poorly for usability. For example, bank sites as a whole are 20% less usable than the personal finance site Mint. Confusing or unwanted promotions, hidden navigation, and dense product text all contribute to poor bank site usability scores

Came across this interesting article. Worth the read.

parentree.in – An Indian parenting community

Chennai based parent tree communications have started an online community for indian parents. The website aims to boost the identity of an individual as a parent and connect him or her to a network of like-minded individuals. They are also focusing on bringing in revenues throug advertisements and online stores in near furture.

Sathya Narayanaswamy, founder and CEO, Parentree. There are very many sites US-based websites which are focusing on family heritage, like genius and others and also there is one such website by name IndiaParenting.com but parentree focus on practical aspects of Indian parenting by enabling parent-to-parent conversations and advice.

FYI, from Aloo Techie:

Parentree.in was founded by Shobha Durairajan and Sathya Narayanaswamy, parents of two little children. The idea was sparked when they often found themselves depending on the parents around them to gather information about what worked best for their children. So they decided to establish this idea on the web, for Indian parents across the globe to benefit from each other’s knowledge. The website first went through a soft launch on August 15, 2008 to a small group of parents.

Kathipara Junction! (Fly)over & over again!

Last sunday our CM of TN opened our long pending Kathipara flyover. The most rewarding gift for Chennai riders. Usally it takes around 1hr & 45mins to reach vadapalani from Naganallur. Now it has been reduced to 40mins.

Though the flyover has three lanes system with wider roads, it lacks in usability!. There are no signboards on the flyover’s. We can find 1-3 at the beginning and once we get on it we are lost. Most of them on the second day took wrong turns and i guess we have lost 3-4 lives in collision over the flyover. But, if these things were focused before and envisioned we could have stopped.

Now, our govt have put up 100 sign boards across the flyover for proper directions. But is it all useful! motorist find there is less visibility on the roads, cleaniness is zero beneath the flyover, no proper lightings, what now! and so how can we overcome these issues!.

Found these related links for this post: http://tinyurl.com/5wfynh , http://tinyurl.com/6ylwu3 ,
http://tinyurl.com/6l3u8p ,

We can issue pamphlets, handouts etc to inform and educate people on the directions and also put in appropriate images at important people gathering areas like t.nagar, velacherry, vadapalani, guindy, saidapet etc. Police officals should be fair enough and pateint in explaning the appropriate routes around flyover. If these things were taken care in advance it would have been a greater help for Chennai riders!.

‘I hate to ruin your day son, but I have to tell you that your mother and I
are getting a divorce; 35 years of marriage… and that much misery is
enough!’

‘Dad, what are you talking about?’ the son screams.

‘We can’t stand the sight of each other any longer,’ the old man says.

‘We’re sick of each other, and I’m sick of talking about this, so you call
your sister in Hong Kong and tell her!’

Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone.

‘Like heck they’re getting divorced,’ she shouts, ‘I’ll take care of this.’

She calls Mumbai immediately, and screams at the old man, ‘You are not
getting divorced. Don’t do a single thing until I get there. I’m calling my
brother back, and we’ll both be there tomorrow. Until then , don’t do a
thing, DO YOU HEAR??’ and she hangs up. The old man hangs up his phone and
turns to his wife. ‘Okay’, he says, ‘It’s all set. They’re both coming for

Rotting Skyscraper-Dubai

Source:Dynamic Architecture

Visionary architect Dr. David Fisher is the creator of the revolutionary Dynamic Tower, the world’s first building in motion. The Dynamic Tower heralds a new era of architecture: Buildings in motion will challenge traditional architecture, becoming the symbol of a new philosophy that will change the look of our cities and the concept of living.

The Dynamic Tower offers infinite design possibilities, as each floor rotates independently at different speeds, resulting in a unique and ever evolving shape that introduces a fourth dimension to architecture, Time.

The Dynamic Tower is environmentally friendly, with the ability to generate electricity for itself as well as other buildings nearby making it the first building designed to be self-powered, it achieves this feat with wind turbines fitted between each rotating floor. An 80-story building will have up to 79 wind turbines, making it a true green power plant.

The Dynamic Tower is also the first skyscraper to be built entirely from prefabricated parts that are custom made in a workshop, resulting of fast construction and of substantial cost savings . this approach known as the Fisher Method, also requires far less workers on construction site while each floor of the building can be completed in only seven days, units can also be customized according to the owners needs and styles.

Dr. Fisher states, “Today’s life is dynamic, so the space we are living in should be dynamic as well, adjustable to our needs that change continuously, to our concept of design and to our mood, buildings will follow the rhythms of nature, they will change direction and shape from spring to summer, from sunrise to sunset, and adjust themselves to the weather, buildings will be alive.

“From now on, buildings will have four dimensions, the fourth dimension is ‘Time’ to become part of architecture,” Dr. Fisher added. “Buildings in motion will shape the sky line of our cities.

By combining motion, green energy and efficient construction, the Dynamic Tower will change architecture as we know it, and will start a new era of Dynamic Living.

Join the Usability Challenge 2008 and participate in the world’s first global usability drive!

On 1 August 2008, we are asking anyone with a passion for usability to solve a usability problem…any usability problem at all…and help make the world a better/safer/less annoying place.

What you need to do on 1 August 2008 is:

1. Find a usability problem – it could be a poorly designed toaster, a confusing or redundant letter from your bank, or even a problem with your experience boarding, flying and disembarking an aeroplane.

2. Design a solution – solve the usability problem, and write your solution down, sketch it up or (if you’re feeling particularly keen) make a quick prototype of the improved product/service.

3. Share it with a person who can solve the problem by implementing your solution – write to the toaster designer, call your bank manager, or talk to a stewardess. Hand him/her your idea. Encourage them to implement it. Be persuasive! and don’t forget to post what you’ve done on the Google Group or the Facebook group. Find out more about the Usability Challenge

BIAL Airport

LCD displayBreifcase  I was in Bangalore yesterday for a conference and had a chance to visit BIAL. I landed at 7.00AM and it took 2 hrs for me to reach the city at that time. So you can imagine how much time it could take for anyone who could travel in the peak hrs(eve) to reach airport. Amazed by the massive look i went exploring some of the scenes which was kind of unplanned for a international airport.

Outside looks so open that i literally caught lot of sand and dust while i was having a cup of coffee with some snacks. If you people say that it is in the begining stage then why would you have the snack shop outside. Also, there is not enought dust bins in the waiting area outside the airport. Each time you have to walk atleast a 50mt to find a dustbin. Major security threat is we can see the flights changing lanes and take off so near and it’s a stone throw away.

Flight schedule LCD kept in the airport is so small that anyone who needs to see their flight details has to get too close to get the info. Inspite of spending so much money in occupying so much of space and to keep a ugly looks briefcase in the middle of the airport they could have spend extra money to have a better display sign board.

Nokia Morph Cellphone Concept Using Nanotechnology

Nokia Research Center (NRC) and the University of Cambridge (UK) have jointly developed the Morph cellphone using nanotechnology, delivering the ultimate functionality including flexible materials, transparent electronics as well as self-cleaning surfaces. It’s the concept phone which has been designed to demonstrate how future mobile devices might be stretchable and flexible.

nokia_morph_concept.jpg

“We hope that this combination of art and science will showcase the potential of nanoscience to a wider audience. The techniques we are developing might one day mean new possibilities in terms of the design and function of mobile devices,” said Dr. Tapani Ryhanen, Head of the NRC Cambridge UK laboratory, Nokia. “The research we are carrying out is fundamental to this as we seek a safe and controlled way to develop and use new materials.”

Fantastic Opportunities For The Morph Concept:

  • Newly-enabled flexible and transparent materials blend more seamlessly with the way we live
  • Devices become self-cleaning and self-preserving
  • Transparent electronics offering an entirely new aesthetic dimension
  • Built-in solar absorption might charge a device, whilst batteries become smaller, longer lasting and faster to charge
  • Integrated sensors might allow us to learn more about the environment around us, empowering us to make better choices

“Developing the Morph concept with Nokia has provided us with a focus that is both artistically inspirational but, more importantly, sets the technology agenda for our joint nanoscience research that will stimulate our future work together,” said Professor Mark Welland, Head of the Department of Engineering’s Nanoscience Group at the University of Cambridge and University Director of Nokia-Cambridge collaboration.

According to the company, “Elements of Morph might be available to integrate into handheld devices within 7 years, though initially only at the high-end.”

Watch a demo video of the Morph cellphone concept below.
